Driveway Condition Assessment

Ten plain questions about what you can see from standing height. The answers sort the driveway into a planning result, with what it means and what to do next.

Check your driveway

This driveway condition assessment from Sundial Driveway Repair uses fixed rules, so the same answers always give the same result. Nothing needs touching or measuring: look at the driveway, answer what you can, and choose "not sure" where it fits.

1. Where is the problem?
2. What is the driveway made of?
3. What do you notice most?
4. Is there a raised lip or step where people walk that someone could catch a foot on?

Look from standing height; there is no need to measure or touch anything.

5. What happens when it rains or the sprinklers run?
6. Has it changed lately?
7. How much of the driveway is affected?
8. Has this spot been repaired before?
9. Does the damage reach the apron, the sidewalk crossing or the curb?
10. Is there a deadline?

Answer the questions and the result appears here. It is based only on what you can see from the surface.

How the results are sorted

Plan a repair soon comes first whenever there is a raised lip where people walk, water running toward the garage or house, soil washing out from under an edge, potholes, or damage that changed quickly. Water under a slab or behind an asphalt edge removes support, so these rarely hold still.

Get the whole driveway looked at applies when damage covers most of the drive, when spiderweb cracking spreads beyond one spot, or when an earlier repair came back. Those are the signs that the cause may sit in the base or the drainage, which is the question the repair vs replacement guide works through.

Plan a repair covers damage that needs fixing but isn't urgent: wider or offset cracks, a single sunken section, a worn surface, loose pavers, ruts in gravel or puddles. Maintain it and keep watching is for thin cracks with level edges, no water problems and no recent change.

The assessment can't see below the surface. Voids, soft base and caliche are found on the first visit, which looks at the whole drive: surface, joints, edges, where water runs, and the garage, sidewalk and street transitions. Cracks in house walls or a garage floor are outside driveway work, and the result says so. For a budget once you know the problem, the cost calculator takes it from there.
